And no Truman

I have not been selected as Truman finalist.
GOOD NEWS: I get to go with my Daddy on the social justice spring break trip to Washington, D.C., and see my wonderful friends that I don't get to spend enough time with!

For those of you (cough Mom cough) who are panicking, concerned, or disappointed over this development:
1. Please do not be.
2. I am not.
3. This was an incredibly valuable process for me regardless.

A couple of reasons I am not/why I think I was not selected:
1. I am not honestly sure I am called to grad school.
2. I am incredibly international in perspective, and I think I may have gone "too global" for the Truman.

That being said, I will be applying for the UK scholarships. We will see what goes down there. And if none of them, I will take the hint and wander off to the Middle East and start trying to make a difference in people's lives in a non-academic setting.

Interview...

Well, kiddos. I've interviewed. It'll probably be another two weeks before I hear anything.
I think I have PISD. Does Post-Interview Stress Disorder exist? lol.
Anyways, I think it went well. It ended with "Remember that college is supposed to be fun." I hope that they appreciate the fact that I'm a workaholic rather than making it a negative...

Interview!

This little girl has an interview at 6 pm with the First Lady's Correspondence Office...wish me luck.
: )

Phone Call...

I have received a voicemail from "Unknown ID" on my phone. It's very possible that this is the White House.
But I am stuck in class...desperately trying to concentrate.
It's not working very well.

Econ Midterm

Had my midterm in Economics of Healthcare this morning. I do believe it went well.
:)

Next up: class, errand, errand, errand, class, class, errand, meeting, meeting, meeting, home.
Huzzah!

"Snowover!"

We decided to stay the night at the church last night due to the crazy amount of snow. We had a small group for dinner, had a good "Hush Topics" chat about drugs and alcohol, and then had a blast eating an amazing amount of chocolate and cuddling while watching the snow fall. We all had our computers out and were working in a big pile on the couch. It was so warm we opened the window...lol.

Happy Valentine's Day!

Will you be my valentine?
We had a fun moment in my African Economics class:
Who are the world’s largest cocoa producers?
Ivory Coast, Ghana, Indonesia, Cameroon, Nigeria
4 of the 5 are in Africa!

It's practically shorts weather going on, here! 42 in Lansing.
Nicer bike weather, but also lots of puddles...

ADS Weekend!

It's the second Alumni Distinguished Scholarship Competition Weekend. Enter hundreds of prospective Spartans, all intelligent and here to find out how wonderful MSU is. I got to speak this morning and then host a bus traveling to tour and eat in Case Hall. Tonight I get to join them for dinner, then talk to the incoming professorial assistants and talk about student life. (An exact mirror of last Friday.)
Good times!
: )

Yeah. Absurd.

I have deemed this morning ridiculous for the following reasons:
1. My bike broke and I had to hustle to class, and was like five minutes late.
2. When I got to class, little children had stolen my seat such that I could not sit by the professor, my selected power source, and my friend for whom I brought breakfast.
3. IT'S ONE FLIPPIN' DEGREE FAHRENHEIT OUTSIDE!

That is all. Hope you're having a fabulous day!!
: )

"Snowmageden"

We have all survived the "Snowpocalypse" predicted. Honestly, it was never white-out conditions. I safely and easily biked into campus today. It really was absurdly pathetic of us to shut down school.
Anyways, my roommates and I enjoyed a quiet day doing homework, watching movies, and enjoying a pot roast. (Thanks for my pretty roasting pan for Christmas, Granna!)

Good heavens!

They really think it's gonna be bad, folks:
MSU suspends classes Feb. 2

According to the National Weather Service, a blizzard warning is in effect for mid-Michigan from 5 p.m. Feb. 1 to 7 p.m. Feb. 2. The warning calls for 10 to 16 inches of snow, dangerous winds and frigid temperatures.

The university has been carefully monitoring the forecasts of severe weather, and has determined for the safety of our students to suspend all classes scheduled for Wednesday, Feb. 2. All academic buildings will be closed to students on Wednesday.

As under other circumstances, faculty members have a responsibility for making suitable arrangements regarding missed class meetings. When classes resume students are expected to work with their instructors to determine how lost classroom time or significant course work will be made up.

An announcement for all MSU employees about general university operations will be coming soon.

Egypt

I was asked to do a "Becca update" on Egypt. So:
I have a friend who's been studying Arabic intensively in Egypt all year. She is currently safe in Turkey and having fun visiting, but isn't sure if/when she's able to go back to Alexandria.
The grumbling against Mubarak has been going on for a long time, but mostly from disgruntled politicians who have been out of power and the academics. A factor in the counter-Mubarak movement that many analysts (including politicians in Egypt) didn't take into account for a good amount of time was the young people. (Always forget us, don't you?)
This is also likely a bit of a response to the events in Tunisia. Like Tunisia, Egypt has a large middle class (for an African country, Tunisia and Egypt both have highly educated populations, and a decent economy...but not enough to provide jobs for all of them). The two countries also have more of a connection to/awareness of the West than most other countries. Egypt has, for a long time, not had a great many ways for disgruntled citizens to express their displeasure. Educated young people without jobs who know what "freedom of speech" looks like but feel their voices have not been heard=large crowds of angry but organized people who know how to run a social movement without going totally insane.
