Snow!

It's snowing again in Michigan...one never knows what it's going to do.
Another week has gone by (my goodness, they fly).
Highlights of the week:
-GenCen (Women's Studies office where I work) had their Annual Reception
-Deirdre McCloskey came to visit (a well-known economist who changed gender when she was already very established. She spoke about economics at James Madison Public Policy College and then spoke with folks about her transition experience at GenCen).
-Attended a resource fair intended for mostly freshmen and sophomores to talk about undergraduate research.
-Got my thesis outline together and a calendar created...it's time to get to work now!
Hope all is well.
Love you all!

MLK - Done!

My multitude of MLK-related events are essentially completed. Last night was the Honors College/Residential College in the Arts & Humanities-sponsored "What would MLK do? What would Malcolm X do? What would Gandhi do?" And, with that, a great week of dialogue was officially brought to a close...though obviously I hope these conversations will continue to happen!

This weekend, Kevin and I are headed to his mother's. Tomorrow, we're seeing an exhibit at the Detroit Institute of Art on "The Many Faces of Jesus." It should be very cool!

Hope everyone is staying warm...it is FREEZING in Lansing.

Bittersweet Conference

The MLK Student Leadership Conference came and went yesterday...
It went well. We had great attendance from high schoolers; fewer numbers from college students, but what can you do. 300+ all told.
It was a rather bittersweet day, as that was the last MLK Conference I'll have at MSU; I've been in partial charge for the past four years. Heavens, does time fly...and on we go.

MLK Events

It's MLK Weekend! And that means lots of wonderful events celebrating issues of justice, diversity, and inclusion around campus.
Saturday: MLK Student Leadership Conference; Showtyme (a multicultural talent show)
Sunday: Jazz Concerts (featuring a suite in honor of JFK and an arrangement of "Rhapsody in Blue")
Monday: Into the Streets (community service); Commemorative March; special exhibit at the MSU Museum with a speech choir; Community Dinner; Panel on what MLK would say to the Occupy Wall Street movement; and much more!

I'm co-chairing the Conference; Saturday will be a busy day.
I wrote and am organizing the speech choir for Monday.
I'm on the panel Monday night. (I could not tell you why.)

Next Thursday, the Honors College is hosting a conversation on MLK, Malcolm X, and Gandhi; Act for Justice (of which I am president) is presenting on Gandhi.

Fun times, January!

"Spring" Semester

The spring semester has begun! I am somewhat concerned about the weather...it's 60, then it freezing rains...then it's just confused.
But classes are great. I am taking:
-Gender, Justice, and Environmental Change (a graduate feminist methodology class)
-Gender, Religion, and Sexuality (the capstone women's studies course...and Kevin and Evan are in it with me!)
-US National Security (a Madison senior seminar in international relations)
-Biotechnology, Violence, and the Body (a graduate medical anthropology course)
-Senior Thesis (writing my thesis on food and water security in the Middle East and North Africa)

It's looking like lots of fun!!!

Guests!

The condo is once again home to friends...Hannah and Megan are over for a few days. We are, of course, on a movie-watching spree. I've had several meetings on campus that have all gone very well - life is good!

Home!

The travels are over, at least until Saturday...
I am back in Lansing. Classes start Monday, and meetings, etc. have already begun. I'm driving to Detroit on Saturday to pick Bailey up from the airport, but that will be the end of the major traveling, at least for a little while.
Safe travels to all the students who are coming back in droves!

Happy New Year!

It's been awhile; my apologies. Christmas got a bit insane. Had a wonderful time seeing family and friends all over the place.
Kevin and I are back at Linda's for a few days, and then it's back to Lansing for the spring semester! Classes start next Monday the 9th; I've got meetings and work starting this Wednesday. Break has ended already...felt like it barely started! Alas.
:)
