MC Midterm

I won't receive the actual grade until Tuesday, I presume, but the following email is hopeful:

Your midterm essays are the top examples in the class of nuanced and
critical analyses of course material. Each of you has done an
excellent job in your respective endeavors.

I am writing to request your permission to use your midterm essays as
models for the class to learn from on Angel. If you grant your
permission, I would strip your name and PDF your essay for display to
the class on the course website.

Please let me know when you get a moment. Congrats on a job well done!

EEEEEEEEEEEEEEK! Truman

I had a breakfast meeting with a friend this morning, and she casually mentions she's applying for the Truman. "So am I," says I. "There's a November 8 deadline for one of the drafts or something, I think," says she.
WHAT!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!
I've been continually asking scholarship folks about this, and the reply has generally been "just look over the website and start thinking about language." Apparently the date was announced at the info sessions, which I was told not to bother attending since information would be what I already knew. (The only published deadline on the Truman website is theirs, in February, but the internal selection committee from MSU wants Nov 8.)
Haha.
Anyways, I've just had a thrilling hour and a half setting up my letters of recommendation. Bishop from church, senior advisor to the president, and my thesis professor are all now on board and committed to making the deadline.
Thank you, thank you, moment of chance from friend. And thank you, thank you, darling adults who give me quick turnarounds.
Now I just have to write up my part...uh huh. No problem. Not like I have anything else to do. But utter catastrophe has been diverted, and I am very slightly ahead of absolute deadlines for assignments and papers, at least.

Dear Yahoo! Finance

Stop panicking my econ professor! The website keeps switching between USD/EUR and EUR/USD...and which is actually the base currency seems to be irrelevant to which way they notate it.

Ethics & Development Brownbag

We had our first Ethics & Development/Peace and Justice Brownbag Discussion as part of our joint "Global to Local Poverty" series today. It went very well and had a good turnout. I have been officially academic and philosophic today. Huzzah!

Question for Discussion

We're watching "Lord of the Rings" whilst working, and something just occurred to me:
LOTR is one of the only series named after the BAD guy! Why do you think this is? Can you think of others?

GenCen Meeting

We had a big meeting in the office for a Higher Education grant yesterday...I was in the office all day playing with errands and setting up lunch. 'Twas rather a lot of fun. Friday night I finally went out with the Ellises again - they were on the Young at Heart singing group tour for a while. Today was a friend's wedding, and then Kels and I went to buy new hinges for the cabinets.
It's still midterm season - I need to write a couple of essays this weekend, get a report to Mark on my thesis work, and some other miscellaneous tasks. Yay for homework!
